Murmela or MacWhisper?

MacWhisper is a Mac app for transcribing files and meetings that also dictates system-wide, with local models and optional cloud providers. Murmela is a dictation app first that also translates and transcribes files, with no cloud provider anywhere. If transcribing recordings is most of your work, read the first box closely.

Choose MacWhisper if…

Transcribing files and meetings is your main job and you want the deepest toolbox for it. MacWhisper's site lists Whisper and Parakeet running on your Mac, speaker recognition, subtitles and exports, transcription from YouTube links and podcasts, batch jobs and watched folders, a command-line tool, and uploads to Notion and Zapier. It records meetings and detects when one starts. Optionally it can send audio to Deepgram, ElevenLabs or Gladia for cloud transcription, and text to one of thirteen cloud language-model providers with your own key, or to a local model through Ollama. There is a free tier with basic transcription and dictation; Pro is EUR 64 once, with lifetime updates and a student discount.

If you want that breadth, or lifetime updates for less than Murmela Lifetime costs after the founders round, MacWhisper is the better choice.

Choose Murmela if…

Dictation is the main job, and you want a tool with no provider list to keep an eye on. Murmela has no cloud transcription and no cloud language models, with or without your own key, so there is nothing to configure and nothing to audit. It translates on your Mac in nine languages and both directions, as you dictate, for pasted text, and for whole documents with Pro. Files up to six hours are transcribed free, with speaker labels in Pro. The license is activated once and never checked again, and the privacy policy is dated October 2026 and lists every connection the app can make.

The honest trade: a smaller set of file tools, no meeting recorder, no YouTube or podcast import, and a Lifetime price of $99 after the first 500 founders.
